Programme for the Workshop on Critical Issues: Research Trends in Contemporary Human Geography
The post-graduate Department of Geography, Lady Brabourne College Kolkata is going to hold a two days workshop for the under-graduate and post-graduate students and research scholars of the department on 19.12.2011 and 20.122011 at the College auditorium.
The workshop would be conducted by two eminent scholars in Critical Geography namely Dr.Swapna Banerjee Guha, Prof. of Development Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and Dr. Balbir Singh Butola, Prof. Centre for the Study of Regional Development, JNU, New Delhi.
Critical Geography is gaining tremendous impetus post 2000 all over the world, yet in West Bengal there is hardly any thrust in this field for the last decade. The post-graduate Department of Geography feels that there is an urgent need for discussing the multi-dimensional issues of social, cultural and political aspects in the age of neoliberalism when development has been sharply polarised. The macro level as well as micro level socio-spatial development of societies is now extremely uneven while social and human capital remains underutilised.
Human Geography as an integral part of social science has much to contribute in the overall development process of various types of countries having sharply differentiated and stratified plural societies like India. As the citizens of eastern part of India, the geographers of eastern India should not be lagging behind in research in critical geography which takes into account basically the complexities of space and social relations and the resultant fallout. In a society the development related issues are region specific and area specific. As such the political will and mode of governance also become of crucial significance in the intra-national context. As far as the international development is concerned the countries of the Global South are clearly at a disadvantage because of a political and economic hegemony of the Global North. The study of the geopolitical landscapes therefore becomes significant as the transnational capital funding is controlled by the North. Along with this the ethnic-cultural strife among cultural groups in various regions, problems of dispossessed persons for the purpose of development, issues related to urban poverty, uneven and polarised development are some of the areas of current research in Human Geography.
The range of issues in Human Geography is extremely wide and highly complex as well as inter-disciplinary. Therefore, scholars and students need to be enlightened and exposed to the global trend of research. The faculty also needs to be exposed to the expanding areas of research in this field. As such the organization of the current workshop would be highly beneficial for the faculty, students and scholars.
