Student Activities :


Students are exposed to various curricular and co-curricular activities throughout the academic sessions, National and international seminars are organised in collaboration with academic associations and institutions of repute and are usually funded by the UGC, Govt. of West Bengal or other high profile corporate sector organizations.

Seminars and workshops :



The College organized the following programs during the last academic session:

  • The College along with the Alumni Association arranged the screening of  Al Gore's famous documentary entitled ‘The Inconvenient Truth’ in September 2007.  As a follow up programme a one-day State Level Seminar  on  Environment in collaboration with the West Bengal Pollution Control Board  sponsored by the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal.was held in February 2008 as part of the National Science -Day  programme. The theme of the seminar was ‘Effective Pollution Control: Reality or Myth?’.  The seminar was conducted in three sessions and Dr. Dipak Chakraborty & his team of scientists from WBPCB informed us of the steps being taken to combat Pollution . Dr. Prabir Kr. Bose, Mech Engg. Dept., J.U. and Dr. Twisha Lahiri, Ex-Jt. Director, Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Centre discussed the health hazards faced by society. Finally   Dr. Ajit Banerjee, a renowned environmentalist deliberated in the  concluding session making a case for the retention of green cover as an effective and natural means of pollution control.
     

  • A week-long workshop for young Biochemists was organized by the Microbiology Department in October, 2007.  Many eminent teachers and scientists from various Institutes delivered lectures and interacted with the students during the daily follow-up Laboratory sessions. The program was aimed at providing students with hands on experience on experimental methods and techniques. 
     

  • The College also organized an Awareness Program on Thalassaemia and Cancer in association with NRS Medical College and Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Centre.  This program, also sponsored by the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal,.was addressed in the first session by Dr Moloy Kr. Ghosh, HOD, Haematology,NRS and  Dr. Sanjay Misra, Biochemist, NRS, both of whom dealt with  Thalassaemia.  In the second session Dr. Partha Sarathi Basu, Oncologist, Chittaranjan National Cancer Hospital and Prof. Subhash Chandra Basu, Professor , Chemistry and Biochemistry, Notre Dame University spoke on Cancer.  A medical team from NRS carried out the initial screening test for thalassaemia for about two hundred students of our college over a period of one month.
     

  • On the occasion of National Science Day the College organized a  day - long programme  which began with a popular Lecture on ‘Gold Extraction From African Gold Mines’ by Dr. N. C. Debnath, Ex-Chemist M/S Ashanti Goldfields Corporation Ltd., Ghana. The programme was inaugurated by Sri Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti, Addl. Chief Secretary, West Bengal Govt and was attended by  Dr Partho Sarathi Chakrabarty, Sc. Advisor, Higher Education Department.. A Science Exhibition organised by the students from all the science departments followed.

    We are grateful to the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal for sponsoring all these programmes.
     

  • The College organized a seminar on “Value Education-Swami Vivekananda’s Vision” on 10th March 2008 in association with Ballygunge Vivekananda Centre for Library and Social Sciences as a part of the IQAC programme.. The programme was aimed at stressing  the need for moral and ethical values in our lives..

 

Physical Education :


The college is equipped to encourage the students to develop athletic skills and interest in indoor as well as outdoor games. An annual sports day is organized at which promising athletes and players are identified. The staff accompanies them to inter college and University sports meets, annually.


Annual Sports :


The annual Sports Day is observer with much enthusiasm every year on the college ground. Students, teachers and non-teaching staffs Participate together on this occasion and talent is identified for participation in Inter College events. A ‘tug of war’ between the students and teachers is a very special attraction.


Student’s Union :


Another interesting event is the Students’ Election for their representatives in the Students’ Union. The Elections take place in a very congenial and healthy atmosphere. The College is adorned with extremely meaningful posters, which vie with one another for the attention of the voters.


Cultural Activities :


The cultural activities of the college are at its peak during the annual Prize distribution ceremony, which involves large-scale students involvement. The drama club, literary club, students’ welfare club and other student bodies organize a wide spectrum of cultural activities for the Annual day.

Fest :


The Annual College Fest is a much-awaited event which is organized by the students. The mood of the college sways to one of celebration ,revelry and friendship amidst participation from colleges in and around the city Debates,Elocution, one-act plays, drama and music competitions besides guest performances sustain the tempo . Oriental and Western dance performances are special attractions.


Publications :


The College publishes the college magazine annually with articles, write-ups, stories, and verses contributed by  students as well as faculty members.  An Annual Report documenting all academic and extra-curricular activities, results and important statistics is also published. Some departments publish their own journals while others put up wall magazines.
 

Extension Activities :


NSS (National Social Services) :

Many of Our students are members of NSS and take part in various activities imparting social awareness against pollution and use of plastics, female trafficking, drug abuse and counseling against it. They attend workshops and have won prizes in debate etc.

Night School :

As social service our students (hostel boarders) teach under - privileged children at the night school set up in the hostel premises. The students from here have qualified in the  madhyamik and uchcha madhyamik examinations.
